Flavors of Aurora: Stirred, not Shaken - the Jewish Experience

David L. Pierce Art and History Center, 20 E. Downer Place
March 20 - June 4, 2016

The Aurora Historical Society with open its newest show on Sunday, March 20th, with a special exhibit opening from 2-5pm. Marilyn Katz is our guest curator.

The Jewish community in Aurora began forming as far back as the 1850s, when early settlers, bearing names like Alschuler and Goldsmith, arrived. The first synagogue was organized in 1904 as the Young Men's Hebrew Association and after decades in rented quarters above stores on Broadway, a temple was built on Lincoln Avenue in 1927, to be superseded by a new temple, B'nai Israel, on Edgelawn in 1961.

The picture above shows a Hannukah party in the 1920s, with Rabbi Rubenstein and bright-eyed children whose families were leaders in all aspects of community life.

Help us bring a WWII Veterans Exhibit to Phillips Park!

The Aurora Historical Society has secured a matching grand to help fund this project - $2 for every $1 we raise. Help us get this exhibit off the ground! Any amount will help us meet our goal. If you have any questions, please call 630-906-0650.
